BEYOND THE PEN | A Journey Into Like Sunrise - {Is It You (Possibly)}
While I try to often incorporate feminist theory into my thought space, I have to be honest about one thing. Disney raised me. Before I had the mental capacity to deconstruct misogyny and critically analyze stereotyped gender roles, I was patiently waiting for an idealized "prince charming" to come sweep me off my feet. I waited for many, many years...I even visited psychics to see if their insight would help me find my knight in shining armor any faster. After many wasted date nights with humans I lacked a basic connection with, I became delusional about potential mates. I would manufacture sparks in hopes of getting closer to the "real thing." After one night of texting back and forth with any newfound fling I met randomly while roaming New York City, I would ask myself, "Is it you?". So I caved and wrote a song about this pathetic behavior.
Songwriting sometimes has the power to transform our behaviors simply because we are forced to confront the content every time we perform the work. This song reminded me to not be that needy girl who doesn't feel complete without a partner to share life with. The moment I stopped caring about relationships all together was the moment that real love fell into my lap. Funny how life works... But this song does include a beautiful sense of hope and optimism, which I don't apologize for. I included it on the album because of its vibe. It blends genres and blurs the lines of whatever box people want to put me in when I say I'm an R&B singer. It's not what people expect me to sing, and it's not what others who look like me are singing. But the lyrics are an honest moment of reflection on my journey, and the goal is to share the whole journey...every step of the way...
